Excavation may arise as part of the planning process in response to a proposed development which threatens the archaeological resource. Excavation can be instigated or commissioned by a number of different individuals or organisations, including local planning authorities, national advisory bodies, government agencies, private landowners, developers or their agents or archaeological researchers.

Excavation will examine and record the archaeological resource within a specified area using appropriate methods and practices within defined research objectives leading to analysis of the results and publication of a report on the findings.

Recent work at St Cadoc's Church Trevethin revealed oak timbers from the old Church roof reused as floor joists. The timbers were dendrochronologically dated. One returned a date range of 1457-1487 and probably originated from the earlier medieval Church on the site that was remodelled in 1845-1847 by Thomas Wyatt. Excavations proceeded beneath the timber floor supports and revealed multiple graves, often containing three or more burials (probably of family groups) and mostly dating from the mid 17th to the early 19th centuries.
