Archaeological Building Investigation and Recording can range from a simple photographic report to more detailed investigations consisting of in depth research and complex digital graphics, dependant on client requirements. Cardiff Archaeology undertakes professional building investigation and recording to mitigate the impact of changes or development on the archaeological resource of a historic building or structure.

Clients may need to comply with a Local Authority condition of Planning and/or Listed Building Consent which requires the production of a detailed archaeological report to establish the character, history, form, date and development of a building. A copy of the report will also be deposited with the regional Historic Environment Record for the public record.

Our projects have included houses, farms and cottages, churches and chapels, brewery, tinplate works and lime kilns, military buildings, water tower and air raid shelters, theatres and cinemas.
